Harnessing the Power of the Internet for Your Export Marketing

Based on a report recently published by UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) and WTO (World Trade Organization), global merchandise exports grew by 2.1 % in 2013. Even with the oil crunch and other global economic problems being experienced by many countries around the world, international exports of products and services continue to grow.

Thanks to the Internet.

The rise in global exports has been spurred by new technologies such as the internet and innovative marketing methods such as b2b trade platforms, SEO, PPC ads, email marketing direct access to the global importers and buyers, etc. Forrester Research, a leading economic think tank reported that 82 percent of all exporters use the internet in their daily business operation. In fact, majority of exporters believe that the internet will be a major strategy in their export business in the coming years. Only a small 8 percent of the exporters say the internet is not that important.

Incorporating the Internet in your Export Marketing Plans

Considering the internet as a major cog in your export business will ensure your success. But in order to harness the power of the internet to push your export business to the top, you need to do the following:

  1. Choose the Right Products

Your export company’s success will be greater if you will carry products or services that have great demand on your target country or target clients. Consider exporting products with the following qualifications:

  •     Products that have high market demand in your target country
  •     Products with excellent quality, in materials and craftsmanship
  •     Products that you have been selling for so long
  •     Products that are popular in your locality
  •     Products with qualities that surpass, or at least match similar imported items
  •     Products which you can guarantee the supply

  1. Identify your Export Market

You need to find a potential market for the products that you will export. You can only do this if you will put in some time in studying and collecting all the necessary information about your target country and its economic market activities.

Start by researching about your country’s exports to other countries. From your research you will be able to determine which countries are buying products that are similar to the products that you have chosen to export.

In addition, you also need to get information about the export statistics from other countries that produce and sell the items similar to your chosen merchandise. From this information, you will be able to know which countries are your potential competitors and how much slice of the export pie they are presently enjoying.

  1. Perform a Market Research

You need to do a market research. This will help you identify the export potential of the products you have chosen for your targeted country. It is best if you can hire a professional market research company to do this to get complete and reliable information.
